The stories

Lame Duck, High Stakes: Congress's Postelection Agenda

WilmerHale · Oct 14, 2026

WilmerHale lists the FY27 NDAA as a must-pass, central year-end objective alongside replacing the stopgap by the Dec. 11 funding deadline; Iran war oversight and policy riders complicate negotiations, a final agreement could carry other national security provisions including surveillance authorities, and unrelated controversial proposals could complicate passage. Its scenario table says funding and the NDAA remain priorities whether Republicans keep both chambers or Democrats win the House or both.

AAJC NDAA Letter to Conferees

Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC · Oct 14, 2026

In an Oct. 14 letter to Wicker, Reed, Rogers and Smith as they reconcile H.R. 8800 and S. 4784, AAJC urges conferees to drop House amendments it says undermine civil rights, including Amdt. #34 (Rep. Scott) withholding funds from National Labs that admit 'covered visitors' from countries of concern, Amdt. #38 (Arrington, Tenney, Pappas) requiring reports on real property transactions with ties to China, Iran, North Korea or Russia within 100 miles of military installations, Amdt. #2 (Roy) barring foreign nationals from service academies, Amdt. #10 (Strong, Moore) barring enlistment of nationals of those four countries, and amendments on transgender service, TRICARE gender-related care, DoDEA girls' sports, and chaplain requirements.

StandWithUs Joins Coalition of 27 Organizations Urging Congress to Include the Deterrent Act in the FY2027 NDAA

StandWithUs · Oct 14, 2026

A coalition of 27 organizations, including StandWithUs, sent a letter dated October 5, 2026 to Senate Armed Services Chairman Roger Wicker and Ranking Member Jack Reed and House Armed Services Chairman Mike Rogers and Ranking Member Adam Smith urging them to include the Deterrent Act in the final conference report for H.R. 8800, the FY2027 NDAA. The legislation would strengthen disclosure requirements for foreign gifts to U.S. colleges and universities; amendments containing its provisions were offered in both chambers during NDAA floor consideration but were left out of the House debate and the Senate managers' package.
